Abaddon The Despoiler: Warmaster of the Imperium Nihilus
With this week's release of the Chaos Space Marines for Warhammer 40K, at Wandering Adventures we want to take a quick look at the lore behind Chaos' big daddy, Abaddon The Despoiler.
Abaddon actually had altruistic beginnings. He was originally named Ezekyle Abaddon, and was a Space Marine of the Luna Wolves Legion during the Great Crusade, a military campaign led by the Emperor of Mankind to reunite the human worlds. The Luna Wolves were later renamed the Sons of Horus in honor of their Primarch, Horus, who was the Emperor's favored son and leader of the Luna Wolves.
As First Captain of the Luna Wolves, Abaddon was Horus's most trusted and capable lieutenant. He played a crucial role in many of the early victories of the Legion and was known for his martial prowess, leadership, and unwavering loyalty to Horus.
The pivotal event in Abaddon's life was the Horus Heresy, a galaxy-spanning civil war initiated by Horus after he was corrupted by the Chaos Gods. Abaddon was among the first to join Horus in rebellion against the Emperor. Throughout the Heresy, Abaddon fought alongside Horus and proved himself a formidable commander and warrior.
The Horus Heresy culminated in the Siege of Terra, where Horus led his forces in a desperate assault on the Emperor's palace. During this final battle, Horus was slain by the Emperor, and the Traitor Legions were driven into the Eye of Terror, a warp rift where the influence of Chaos is strongest.
In the aftermath of Horus's death, the Sons of Horus were left leaderless and fractured. Abaddon seized control, renaming the Legion the Black Legion and abandoning any remnants of loyalty to Horus. He sought to unite the scattered Chaos Space Marine warbands under his banner and wage an unending war against the Imperium.
Abaddon became known as "the Despoiler" for his relentless and devastating Black Crusades. These are massive, galaxy-spanning campaigns aimed at destabilizing and destroying the Imperium. He has launched thirteen major Black Crusades, each causing immense destruction and posing significant threats to Imperial worlds.
The Black Crusades are part of the larger conflict known as the Long War, a protracted struggle between the forces of Chaos and the Imperium that began with the Horus Heresy. Each crusade is a step in this ongoing war, aimed at gradually wearing down the Imperium's defenses, exploiting its weaknesses, and ultimately achieving the final victory of Chaos.
For Abaddon, the Black Crusades are also deeply personal. They represent his desire to surpass Horus, his former master, and prove himself as the ultimate champion of Chaos. Abaddon is driven by a combination of personal ambition, hatred for the Imperium, and a desire for vengeance against the Emperor and those who defeated Horus during the Horus Heresy.
