The Best Strategies for Being Competitive in Kill Team 3rd Edition
The third edition of Kill Team has brought exciting new mechanics and nuanced changes to how games are played. Building a strong team isn’t just about picking the right operatives—it’s also about understanding the battlefield, mastering terrain interactions, and planning for tactical flexibility.
Battle Setup: The Foundation of Victory
In previous editions, Games Workshop's pre-designed out-of-the-box terrain setups provided a relatively balanced experience. However, in the new edition, these setups can feel less equal, meaning the terrain layout plays a much larger role in shaping the flow of battle.
Key Tips for Terrain Setup:
-
Study the Terrain: Before the game begins, analyze how the terrain can support your Kill Team’s strengths.
- If you have a ranged team, look for vantage points and firing lanes.
- Close-combat teams should identify routes that provide cover and reduce the risk of being shot before engaging.
-
Critical Ops Points and Tac Ops Points:
- Your ability to score Critical Ops Points (main mission objectives) and Tac Ops Points (secondary objectives) depends heavily on your team’s ability to control the battlefield.
- Design your strategy around using terrain to both secure objectives and deny your opponent critical positions.
Operative Setup: Coordinating with Terrain
This edition introduces more flexibility in operative setup, which now works hand-in-hand with how terrain is placed. Proper positioning can make the difference between a winning strategy and a struggling team.
-
Coordinate Setup with Terrain:
- Place operatives in positions that allow them to take advantage of terrain. For example, close combat specialists should begin near heavy cover to advance safely, while snipers should position on vantage points.
- Remember that your deployment zone often dictates your team’s role for the mission. A defensive setup may require a tighter formation, while an aggressive team can spread out to pressure objectives early.
-
Utilize Operative Roles:
- Position operatives where they can perform their roles effectively. Objective carriers should be near paths to key areas, while suppressive fire specialists should cover open lanes.
Obscuring, Vantage, and Cover: Mastering Complex Rules
These mechanics remain some of the trickiest aspects of Kill Team. Here’s a breakdown to help clarify how to use them effectively.
-
Obscuring:
- In this edition, Obscuring no longer prevents a shooting attack outright. Instead:
- When firing at an obscured target, you reduce the number of RETAINED hit dice by one, and critical hits are downgraded to normal hits.
- This rule supersedes other effects, so it’s important to account for it when planning attacks.
- Operatives now lose Obscuring if they are within 1" of terrain, which eliminates the awkward “dead zones” from previous editions. This rule simplifies gameplay but requires careful attention to terrain proximity.
- In this edition, Obscuring no longer prevents a shooting attack outright. Instead:
-
Vantage:
- Vantage points provide significant advantages for long-range operatives but require a clear understanding of positioning.
- An operative on a vantage point gains a commanding line of sight but must often expose itself to enemy fire.
- Use supporting operatives or heavy terrain to guard these positions.
- Vantage points provide significant advantages for long-range operatives but require a clear understanding of positioning.
-
Cover:
- Cover is now determined on an operative-to-operative basis, with terrain within the control range of the defending model offering protection.
- An operative cannot claim cover when within 2" of an attacker, meaning close-range skirmishes rely entirely on positioning and durability.
- Understanding these rules allows you to maximize defensive positioning and bait opponents into over committing.
Tactics for Competitive Play
To succeed in the new edition, strategy must extend beyond your roster and into how you play the game:
-
Focus on Objectives:
- Points win games, not eliminations. Prioritize movement and positioning to secure objectives, using aggressive actions only when they support this goal.
-
Control Key Terrain:
- Identify critical terrain pieces that can shape the battle. Heavy cover, vantage points, and open lanes are all tools for controlling the flow of the game.
-
Adapt to Your Opponent:
- Flexibility is essential. If your opponent is heavily invested in ranged attacks, counter with obscuring terrain and close-range operatives. Conversely, open terrain can favor shooting-heavy teams.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to master these changes is through regular gameplay. Refine your strategies, experiment with new Kill Teams, and learn from every match.
