Flesh and Blood does not get the mainstream attention that some of the bigger card games do, and I have always thought that is a shame, because pound for pound it is one of the best designed games on our shelves. If you have never tried it, the pitch is simple. Two players, one hero each, no shared board of resources to hide behind, just you and your opponent trading blows until someone drops. It rewards good decisions and punishes lazy ones, and there is nothing quite like the tension of a close game.

This month the game hits a real milestone. Usurp the Shadow Throne is the twentieth set for Flesh and Blood, which means the game has now put out twenty expansions across roughly seven years. That is a serious run for an independent studio, and Legend Story Studios has earned it by making sets that actually shake things up rather than just adding more of the same.

Usurp the Shadow Throne leans hard into the Shadow side of Rathe. The story follows Shadow characters, Levia, Malice, and Viserai among them, as they move to seize the Shadow Throne, and the whole thing carries a wrath of the monarch tone that suits the darker heroes perfectly. Mechanically it is a chunky set, over two hundred and sixty cards, so there is plenty in here for Classic Constructed players hunting for upgrades and for newer players looking to build their first competitive deck around a hero they like. There is also an Armory Deck for Malice landing just ahead of the set, which is one of the cleaner ways to pick up a hero and get playing without chasing singles.

Here is the part that matters if you are local. We are running our pre-release for Usurp the Shadow Throne, and pre-release is genuinely the best on ramp this game has. Everyone opens fresh product and builds on the spot, so the cards are new to the whole table and nobody has a season of practice on you. It is the most level the playing field ever gets, and it is a great low pressure way to try Flesh and Blood if you have been curious. If you already play, you know the drill, and you know how good that first crack at a new set feels.
