Prerelease, Launch Day, and Release: What They Mean and Why Play In-Store Wandering Adventures

If you play trading card games, you have seen the words prerelease, launch day, and release used almost interchangeably. They are not the same thing, and knowing the difference helps you plan when to show up and what to expect.

Prerelease is the earliest chance to play with a brand new set, usually a week or so before it hits shelves. It is almost always a sealed event, which means you open fresh packs on the spot and build a deck from what you pull. Nobody has a tuned, optimized list yet, so it is the most level and welcoming way to experience a set. Beginners and veterans genuinely start on equal footing.

Release, or launch day, is when the set officially goes on sale to everyone, and singles, sealed product, and full deckbuilding open up. Some stores also run a launch event to celebrate.

The short version: prerelease is play first, then buy. Launch day is buy and build.

A good example is happening right now. Flesh and Blood's landmark 20th set, Usurp the Shadow Throne, kicks off its War of the Monarch story arc, and we are hosting our prerelease on Friday, September 19 at 11 AM. The set itself goes on sale September 25. That gap is exactly the point. You get to crack packs, build a sealed deck, and play with the new cards before the wider release, all in a relaxed setting with staff on hand to answer rules questions.

Why play in-store instead of just buying a box online and opening it at home? A few reasons. You get real games in immediately rather than staring at a pile of cards with no one to play against. You meet the local community, which is how casual players turn into regulars and rivals turn into friends. And a sealed prerelease is the single best on-ramp for a new player, because everyone is figuring the set out together.

Opening a box alone on your couch is fine. Opening one at a table full of people doing the same thing is an event.
