Hellbreak TCG: The Horror Trading Card Game Coming This Fall

Every so often a trading card game arrives with a hook that stops you in your tracks. Hellbreak is one of those. It is a brand new horror TCG from Spin Master and Universal Products and Experiences, designed by the veteran team at Ghost Galaxy, and it does something no other card game has done at this scale: it turns the greatest monsters in horror history into a competitive tabletop arena.

The concept at the heart of the game is what the designers call a "Monster Sandbox." Picture your favorite horror icons pulled out of their own films and thrown into the same ring to fight it out. The first set draws from Universal Pictures' deep horror catalog, starting with the classic Universal Monsters where cinematic horror began, and reaching toward later and more modern genre icons as the game grows. One of the first announced starter matchups says it all: Jaws versus Dracula.

Ghost Galaxy is led by Christian T. Petersen, a tabletop designer with decades of experience, and the studio has described the design goal in three words: dangerous, cinematic, and endlessly replayable. The pitch is a fast, bloody, highly collectible game that feels like a horror film playing out on the table, which is a very different mood from the fantasy and sci-fi themes that dominate the TCG shelf right now.

Hellbreak is slated for a global launch this fall, with the debut set titled Dawn of Terror. As with any new release, exact product timing can shift, and more details on factions, artwork, and collector editions are rolling out through the year. What is already clear is that this game is aimed squarely at two crowds who rarely get something made just for them at once: horror fans and card game players.

If you fall into either camp, or both, this is a launch worth watching. New games are the most fun to get in on early, before the meta settles and while everyone is learning the cards together.
